Shanghai Women's Federation (SWF) and Shanghai No.1 Maternity and Infant Hospital established a new, non-profit organization on June 1, to promote the use of painkillers during childbirth.

The Painless Delivery Promotion League is the first such organization of its kind in China, where over 90 percent of births are carried out without pain-relieving techniques or drugs such as an epidural.

Traditional Chinese beliefs have meant that many pregnant women are reluctant to accept such assistance and have to endure severe pain during labor.

The organization has been set up to positively influence public opinion in this aspect by organizing various activities and promoting the use of the epidural in the coming years.

Experts say that the pain of a delivery can reach eight or nine on a scale of 10, making it a serious challenge for most women.
