A cooperative composed of female CPC members, women officials and skilled women in Tuanjie Village, Qilin District in Qujing, a city in Southwest China's Yunnan Province, has become an example of helping rural women get out of poverty.

According to Zhang Hongmei, President of the Women's Federation of Qilin District, the village has 74 registered poverty-stricken families and 242 people living in poverty. They make a living at flue-cured tobacco, silkworm breeding, mulberry growing, planting vegetables and manual work.

The women's federation and the local human resources and social security bureau offer various training programs, including traditional embroidery and knitting techniques, to further improve the skills of the women in poverty who were included as cooperative members.

After they participated in several training sessions, most of them have mastered at least one skill to earn a living, said Gong Fenzhen, the cooperative's head.

The federation also supported the cooperative to develop its brand through integration of folk arts and local products. An exhibition and training base and a sales center have been launched to showcase its crafts and promote its brand.

Local villager Liang Xiaohua said the job in the cooperative earns her more than 10,000 yuan (US $1,400.13) per year after she learned embroidery techniques through the training courses.

Gong said 19 members in the cooperative have helped villagers in 162 households increase their income and each household was expected to earn nearly 20,000 yuan (US $2,800.26) per year through making crafts.
