On the occasion of the Sixth National Poverty Alleviation Day, which is observed on October 17 every year, a parallel forum of the 2019 National Poverty Alleviation Day Forum themed women's fight against poverty in China's old revolutionary base areas was held in Beijing on October 14.

Zhang Dongmei, Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women's Federation, attended the forum. She put forward three suggestions on the role of women and women's federations in the fight against poverty in the old revolutionary base areas during the forum.

Zhang said women's federations at all levels and the women's work committee of the China Old Revolutionary Base Area Construction Promotion Association should study and implement the spirit of the keynote speeches on poverty alleviation delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping, assist the Party committees and governments to help women fight against poverty.

Women's federations need to stimulate the endogenous motivation of impoverished women, carry out poverty-alleviation actions, promote the development of the poverty-alleviation industries, and seek for more support policies and measures in order to definitively help impoverished women get out of poverty.

In addition, women's federations should mobilize and unite women's social organizations and the group members of the women’s federations to meet the practical needs of women and children.

The forum reviewed women's revolutionary stories in China's old revolutionary base areas in Yan'an, a city in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Yimeng, an area in East China's Shandong Province, and Taihang, an area in North China's Shanxi Province. Six women's endeavors and deeds to fight against poverty were reported at the forum.

The second group of women volunteers' team of poverty alleviation who would set off to old revolutionary base areas attended a flag-presenting ceremony during the forum.

The 2019 National Poverty Alleviation Day Forum consisted of 21 sub-forums focused on different topics, including industrial poverty alleviation, education, health, and eco-environmental protection.

On the same day, a release of a series of books about poverty-alleviation pioneers and a poverty-alleviation-themed short-video exhibition were launched at the Beijing Convention Center.

The forum was sponsored by the Department for Women's Development of the ACWF, the publicity and education center under the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development and the China Old Revolutionary Base Area Construction Promotion Association.
