CWDF, Spanish Embassy in China Launch Folk Sewing Cooperative Program

The China Women's Development Foundation (CWDF) and the Spanish Embassy in China launched an international exchange and cooperation program on the promotion of folk sewing techniques under the @Raise Her Business Plan at the Palace Museum in Beijing on June 26.

During the gathering, representatives from two sides signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen China-Spain cooperation on craftsmanship and the building of relevant workshops.

The workshops will feature craft industries such as embroidery skills of the Qiang ethnic group, dyeing and sewing techniques of the Miao ethnic group, yak wool R&D, and hand-woven carpet in  Sichuan, Guizhou and Qinghai provinces and Tibet Autonomous Region respectively in the next three years.

In addition, they will also build China Craftsman Academy in Deqing, a county in East China's Zhejiang Province.

Meng Xiaosi, President of the CWDF, said that the two sides would work together to explore a path for integrated development between China's intangible cultural heritage and Spanish concepts on modern designs, produce high-quality goods with strong market demand, help impoverished Chinese women become well connected with the market and prosperous with their involvement in craft business, and set up a paradigm for cultural exchanges and philanthropic cooperation between China and its western counterparts.

Rafael Dezcallar de Mazarredo, Spanish Ambassador to China noted that the bilateral ties have enjoyed a robust growth and women-oriented exchanges between two countries have been further deepened over the past years.

He stated that the Spanish Embassy in China was willing to contribute to enhancing cultural exchanges and cooperation between two countries, organize more Spanish enterprises to become involved in cultural cooperation, and work with relevant sides to deepen bilateral ties under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Du Haijiang, Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Palace Museum, also attended the event.
