Exit polls show former Defense Minister Yuriko Koike is set to be elected as Tokyo's first female governor.

Koike, a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), ran as an independent candidate after failing to win the party's endorsement.

The election, contested by a record field of 21 candidates, was called after Tokyo's previous governor resigned over a financial scandal.

A key task for Koike will be dealing with Tokyo's troubled preparations for the 2020 summer Olympics.
