Beijing gallery Lotus Chen Art Space, located in the city's famous 798's art district, opened a large-scale exhibition on September 10 featuring sculptures and paintings by nine artists on an esoteric and Gothic theme.

The exhibition "Tremendous Phantasmagoria" was organized by the International Art Development Fund and selected by female collector and curator Chen Yalian, the director of the gallery.

Over the past six months Chen visited the studios of over 100 artists to find the best work for the exhibition. At the opening, she said the initial idea to hold this exhibition was to encourage people to support each other with strong compassion and bravely pursue the life they want.

A series of eye-catching sculptures in shape of animal skulls, called The 12 Chinese Zodiacs, by artist He Wenjue made its debut at the show and drew special attention from visitors.

He said that the idea came about when she was researching the loss of the 12 famous Chinese zodiac sculptures in the Old Summer Palace in Beijing during the Siege of the International Legations. "The 12 zodiacs are a symbol of traditional culture. There have been quite a few works on this subject. I wanted to make something different."

"Finally, I decided to make bronze cast skulls, gilded on the surface with 24 karat gold. I wanted to propose a sense of self-examination among artists towards national and historical issues," she added.

The exhibition runs till October 15.
