Sweet Song Queen Li Lingyu: Remarry for Love

January 18,2007 Change Text Size A A A

Sweet Song Queen Li Lingyu took a hiatus from singing in the1990s. She went to Japan first and worked as MTV's anchorwoman for two years. Then she went to Canada and got married.

"Electronic Dictionary" Love story

In 1980, the 17-year-old Li Lingyu was recruited by Beijing Hongqi Yue Opera Troupe, and then she joined the China Oriental Song and Dance Ensemble. She met her first love there and married him when she was only 21. In 1987, she made her first album and earned the title, "Sweet Song Queen."

She encountered frustration in her career and marriage in1993. To deal with the double blow, she went to Japan to work as an anchorwoman..

In 1995, Li returned to China and while applying to immigrate to Canada, she met Gary, the president of a Canadian investment company. However, they did not continue to have contact after that first encounter.

On September 20, 1995, Li was invited to a party in Montreal. She sang a song at the party, which received thunderous applause. Gary, who was crazy about her beautiful voice, suddenly remembered that she was the girl he had met in Beijing.

After the party, Gary, accompanied by his translator, asked her for her mobile number. When she arrived home, she saw that Gary had sent her roses.

Gary's call followed. He spoke slowly and carefully so that Li could understand him. Li thought that he was a funny guy rather than Mr. Right. She was quite cautious since her first marriage had ended in failure.

He called everyday. Li began answering her phone with an electronic dictionary. As the conversations got longer, they got to know each other better.

In 1996, while spending the Chinese National Holiday together in China, Gary asked Li to marry him while they were at the beach. Li was not sure what she wanted, so she helped him up without giving an answer.

Collision between Eastern and Western Culture

Li wanted Gary to retreat in the face of difficulty so she returned to China without saying goodbye. However, Gary followed her and arrived in China one day later.

No matter where Li went, Gerry would follow her. She would visit her friends and ignore him, but he did not get annoyed and remained patient. So she grew to have a fondness for him Her relatives and friends liked him, too. Finally Li's parent also accepted him.

They married in Shanghai on April 12, 1997.

Being Jewish, Gary has a strong sense of family. He marked her birthday on the calendar and threw her a party each year. On Mother's Day, he will prepare carnations and write her a card that says,  "Dear mother, happy mother's day".

Li, on the other hand, thinks that a romantic candlelit dinner is nice, but it is even better to invite a bunch of friends out to eat. She is forgetful and rarely celebrates her birthday.

On Gary's birthday in 2002, he returned home to Beijing from the US expecting his wife to have planned something for his birthday.

However, Li had forgotten his birthday and had not planned anything. No gift, no birthday cake, and she wanted to eat hot pot on the "special" day.

On their way to the restaurant, Gary's friend called from Canada to wish him a happy birthday. Suddenly, she realized her mistake and asked her friends to buy flowers and a cake. When he saw the late flowers and cake, his eyes were moist. She knew that he was not moved but sad because his beloved wife had forgotten his birthday.
This deeply touched her. From then on, she realized that in a marriage, one should pay attention to the details.

In 2000, Gary Junior was born. The couple disagreed on how to raise him. She thought that Gary Jr. should be strictly disciplined while he thought Gary Jr. should think over and admit his mistakes himself. Moreover, picking a school also led to disagreements. She thought the Canadian school system was undisciplined and he thought Chinese primary students were overworked. After heated debate, they agreed to send Gary Jr. to a private Canadian primary school.

Learn to be a good wife

After the failure of a marriage and another transnational marriage with so many cultural differences, could Li be a good wife?

Jerry is Western, so his eating habits are quite different from the Chinese. She had to take this into consideration when she cooked. Generally speaking, she picks up whatever her husband likes.

In order to keep her husband and child healthy, she learned how to make soup, and makes it for them everyday. She thinks that soup combines the merits of Western and Chinese cuisines. Furthermore, she makes sure her husband eats vitamins everyday.

Meanwhile, Gerry has never transferred his work pressure to her.

She cherished the hard-won happiness very much. But she also thought that she should have a career to keep the marriage exciting. From her first marriage, she learned that the couple should know and care about each other, but they should also have their own living space. If a woman wants to be truly happy, she should have her own career. So she found herself a new direction and began making changes.

Besides being a good wife, she started a company----Hua Yu Tian Di Culture Media Co.,Ltd---- and became the Art Director and General Manager.

In 2004, she played an imperial concubine in "The Secret History of Xiaozhuan" (TV series), which was universally praised.

On April 13, 2005, she played Yu, the Sun Goddess, in a 3-dimensional musical drama called "Life Adventure". In the story, Yu falls in love with Hua, an astronaut from earth.

On November 6, 2005, Li returned to singing with her new album "Beauty Chant "which cost more than RMB 1 million. She has received a warm welcome from her fans.

She, who got remarried, gradually learned the meaning of life. When the flowers and applause faded away, one still has to live. After a long journey, she has finally found real happiness - - to be a woman loved by someone and as a mother who loves her child.
