"I never dreamed
that I would live in a bright, open house. I am very grateful to the Party, to
the government, and to the Women's Federation", says Liu Hong, a poor single
mother in Taoyuan village, Beizhen town, Liaoning Province. Holding the key to
her new house, Liu's eyes brimmed with tears. Now, she no longer has to live
under another person's roof, and her 4-year old son will have room to play.
Some 100 poor single mothers, including Liu, are the first group of
beneficiaries of the Comfortable Housing Project for poor rural single mothers
in Liaoning Province, and they will move into their new houses in the
autumn.
Since 2004, the Women's Federation of Liaoning Province has conducted two
surveys of poor rural single mothers.
This year, special attention has been paid to poor rural single mothers
without fixed places of residence or living in decrepit houses. Due to various
difficulties, they live a hard live and cannot afford to build houses. To tackle
the problem, the Women's Federation of Liaoning Province carried out the
Comfortable Housing Project targeting single mothers, and 2 million yuan
(294,118 US dollars) has been collected for the project.
The Liaoning provincial Party committee and Liaoning People's Government also
attach great importance to the Comfortable Housing Project.
In rural areas, building houses is a big matter, which cannot be achieved by
single mothers alone. Cadres from all levels of Women's Federation as well as
other Party and political leaders have made joint efforts. As a result, the 100
houses were completed on schedule.
